Cotte d'armes, 13th century (Patterns)

Figure - Maciejowski Bible, 1250

Figure - Patterns
Order of making:
1) If undyed fabric is used, it must be dyed red using household dyes. Usually two sachets are needed. It is not recommended to cut before dying - only roughly measure the needed amount of material with an allowance. If the fabric is already dyed, rinse it in warm water and dry.
2) Cut the material along the patterns (the front and back part, 2 large gores and 4 small ones)
3) Sew together the shoulders of the front and back parts
4) Sew the halves along the sides, inserting the large (90x30) gores, one on each side
5) Into the slits at the front and back insert the small (15x60) gores - two at the back and at the front. Do not sew the gores shut - so that a slit remains
6) Fold the edges twice and hem
7) Finish the seams inside the cotte d'armes
8) Attach the cross of the Priory of St. John of Jerusalem so that its centre is at the solar plexus.
All sewing must be done only by hand.
